About Youth and Family Programs
Shasta County has various foster care and adoption agencies that can assist you in finding a child that meets your specified age, ethnicity, and personality.
Child abuse can be avoided by placing the child with a foster parent. This article details the many NCYFP programs that facilitate better foster care for youth and foster parents alike.
First and foremost, Youth & Family Programs offers various avenues for foster families and foster youth (from infancy to the age of 21 years). NCYFP seeks ways of providing a safe and caring environment for all foster children. They also provide parental support and help children heal from their complex trauma, nurturing them and providing them with a structured life as befits a normal child. To achieve this, the organization has put in place various programs. Let's discuss some of these programs.
Transitional Housing Program
The Transitional Housing Program is a program put in place for foster youth between the ages of 16 and 18. The program aims at helping youths become independent and prepared for adult life before they turn 18.
Typically each youth is assigned a mentor, normally another young person as a roommate. Through daily interaction, the fostered youth learns a lot from their mentor. They can learn how to pay their bills, complete their grocery shopping, and be able to take care of themselves and their needs. The Transitional Housing Program for Non-Minor Dependents (THP NMD) helps young adults develop vital skills, such as helping them get an apartment. There are also career development opportunities, work internships, as well as classes on safety skills, sexual health, and financial health, among others.
The Independent Living Program
The Independent Living Program helps fostered youths to achieve self-sufficiency before leaving the foster care system. The program provides them with the training, services, and benefits they need to prepare them for their futures. More importantly, it is available for both current and former foster youths.
Typically, the program includes (but is not limited to) one-on-one casework, life skill workshops, assistance getting employment, financial literacy, parenting support, and practice setting goals and achieving them.
The facility is also a visitation center for families. Children and parents who are referred by the county can be able to visit the facility. They may do so for various reasons that may include; having a compassionate and respectful environment, getting parents' support during the visit, helping parents acquire parenting skills through parenting classes, and providing parenting instructions based on individual needs.
Currently, there are two main visitation centers: Shasta County Family Center, located at 164 West Street, Redding, CA. 96001 and Chico Visitation Center 2577 California Park.
Conclusion
NCYFP is a wellbeing-focused foster care program that allows foster youths to become self-dependent. It has various programs that help youths and parents acquire the skills needed for long-term success. Various visitation centers provide parental instructions and training. Also, foster youths get a chance to have one-on-one experience and training from a mentor. We invite you to visit our facility and learn more about what we do.
